Hi Jane and Sophie

Watched the program, on the positive side they did make a clear distinction between RA and osteo which was a good thing, and highlighted the benefit of a healthy diet. I ve always felt that a good healthy diet is no bad thing wit h RA and try to keep the Crunchie bars to a minimum RollEyes . I and am now, once again taking daily a high strength Omega 3 fish oil ( 1360 gm ) capsule.

Hi Jane

I watched the programme yesterday - it was really good that they distinguished between RA and Osteo. I have recently joined a local slimming class because after 2 steriod injections and an increase in meds my weight was rapidly going up, which was affecting not only my joints but my energy too. The weight is coming off "slowly" but I am eating so much more healthily and am feeling the benefit, having said that I noted that the programme advised the need to eat more oily fish too. Julie - have you found the Omega 3 fish oil capsules beneficial. I am wary about taking another tablet!!

this sounds interesting i didnt see the program but i changed my eating habits years ago when told got ra etc and i dont eat fish in any form so took flaxseed oil & evening primrose and found that they worked i also ate 1 brasil nut everyday, an elderly chap told me about the nut thing i felt it worked but they are so expensive now i stopped buying them,my gp said any oils are good but to check with him first as dont want to overload on pills if not needed, the nras site has a page on oils and diet worth a look, dorothy.

Hi Jane

I know there is some scientific proof that omega 3 is beneficial with RA so really that is why I take it, never really sure if it helps but I think mentally it makes me feel I am doing as much as I can for help things. A have a friend in Texas, with RA, and when he was diagnosed the consultant told him to take omega 3 as part of his standard medication.

BigGrin Hi everyone.

I watched last nites food doctor, amazing 29 year old lady that has had her knees and hips replaced, she looked fresh skinned after starting on the food doctor anti flam diet.

Re omega......I take high strengh pure cod liver oil 1000mg rich in omega 3 and vitamins a & d which supports joint, brain, skin, heart and immune health with 240mg active omega 3 in large plastic pot (240 capsules) take one a day.

Also, optiflex glucosamine hci 1000mg 2 a day.

Rose hip 250mg standardised extract one a day

Noone has said you must take it, I do in the hope of some good!

Plus the mexthtrix, sulf, hydro, folic acid, and pain relief

Rheumy said in the beginning to stop red meat (miss bacon muffin) I have poached egg muffin now and again, my husband has the bacon!!
I eat salmon......used to like mackerill gone off it (ate lots in the begining).
Love veggies, and fruit.

I got a book in the beginning of diagnosis - arthritis for dummies off amazon, it tells you of nightshades (what not to eat).

What did I learn last nite? Walnuts are good and low gi diet.....I have a rosemary connelly gi diet (before I had ra I sed to go to rosemary connelly) I think I might start up.
I pay £39.00 a month for local leisure centre haven't used for a while, I think I shall look to cancel save money.

Need to do something weight wise, so I can show the surgeon for my knee I'm showing willing!!

What foodie tips has anyone got to share round?
Should we do a food thread?

Jane

i joined slimming world and now lost 2st,the group and advice is great, some like me have ra or other health issues and i can still have a munchies night, the back to basics cooking covers all the vitamins and minerals we need in our every day foods, for me it was basically just going back to eating the right foods,i lost my husband and done the snack and go plus fast food for ease, subed with vit pills etc and didnt think about myself,by joining a club i started to cook properly again and eat more fruit and veg,i even munch on carrots dipped in greek yoghurt,i have never had a sweet tooth so it wasnt that hard to give up or cut down on bircuits etc, i feel so much better and glad i stopped all the pills i didnt really need,i have tried gillian diets and ended up ill,ive worked out what suits me,i do feel a difference in my joints and movement also sleeping, good luck enjoy trying, dorothy

I watched the Food hospital programme too. My Rheumatologist recommends Omega 3 Fish oil, says it's the only proved natural supplement that helps R.A, all the rest of supplements are a waste of money.

If anyone is going to buy fish oil it's really important to pick a fish oil with the highest EPA and DHA amounts because this is what is proved to decreases inflammation. The bottle may say high dose fish oil but contains very little EPA and DHA. I take lemon fish oil from Higher nature that contains 885mg of EPA and 590mg of DHA, it's also screened for any pollutants or contamination. Don't take fish oil if you are on warfarin, aspirin as it makes your blood thinner and come off it before surgery. It also lowers your blood pressure so check with your doctor if you are on blood pressure tablets and also check if you are diabetic as it alters your blood sugar.

I've been on victosa to help with my weight and it's been so good
Very good at reducing the insulin I take
And therefore the waist has begun to appear under my now size 18s.
No longer a 24!

Yippee

As for the other diet stuff, take what suits and avoid what doesn't seems to be the advice
I'm going to try (sigh) fish oils again but hate them really!

Yuk
